78YO & GOING STRONG ON SOLO NON-STOP SAIL AROUND THE WORLD – WESTABOUT!

Bill Hatfield, aged 78, who sailed out of Southport Yacht Club, here on the Gold Coast, 144 days ago at the start of his attempt to become the oldest solo sailor to circumnavigate the world west-about non-stop, continues to make good progress. He’s now covered 17,500 nautical miles and is off the coast of Brazil. To comply with the rules governing his attempt he has, so far, sailed his 38-footer, L’eau Commotion, west from Australia to the Cape of Good Hope, north in the Atlantic until he crossed the Equator and reached the Canary Islands (where he rounded El Hierro). He is now heading south on a course towards The Horn.
